Recent dramatic events in the Gaza Strip and the local and international political developments in their wake have generated an urgent need to analyze the rapidly changing situation and to strategize together – Palestinians, Israelis and internationals – how to best act in this new context.
In previous conferences, we created the framework for a type of international think tank that includes Palestinians, non-Palestinian Arabs, Israelis and international activists. Now is the time to strengthen this framework and loudly demand, as representatives of civil society, an end to the Israeli occupation and building of a just peace. The Bilbao Declaration, drafted and agreed to in 2003 by a wide spectrum of local and international groups, presents the minimum necessary conditions for such a peace.
This seminar aims to begin analyzing current political developments. We will further commence the process of jointly updating the Bilbao Declaration while strategising together on how to use it as a positive basis for our local and international advocacy, most immediately at the upcoming Madrid Social Forum (thematic meeting on
Palestine
) in December 2007. A Follow-Up Committee of representative organizations and activists will be selected at the conclusion of this seminar to lead this process.
