Settler Violence and Occupation Watch: Report XII
Dember 11th - December 17th, 2000
On December 11: At about 12.30, settlers from the Ofra blocked the way
of Tha'ir Nasri (aged 21), from Sinjil and smashed the windshield of
his car with stones. The Palestinian driver reported the incident at
the Israeli roadblock at Uyoon al Haramiye but the soldiers ignored his
complaint. Two of LAW's field researchers who took photographs of the
damaged car had their film confiscated and were dragged away. On December 12: A group of settlers tried to run over three
Palestinians standing on the side of a road near Hawwarah village.
Settlers also damaged several Palestinian cars. Settlers cooperating with soldiers bulldozed and uprooted over 300 trees at Salman's farm in Hebron. On December 13: Tens of settlers from Kadim in the West Bank closed the
main road connecting the West Bank districts of Qalqilia and Nablus.
They then prevented vehicles from passing through. On December 14: Armed settlers blocked the roads of the villages of N'aeem and S'aeer and proceeded to beat several Palestinian residents. On December 15: In the afternoon, a settler from Tapuakh (near Nablus)
shot at farmers while they were working their land. Awab Abad Il-Fatah
(35) was shot in the neck and seriously injured. On December 17: At 4 p.m. Mohammed Hamed Shalash (18) from the village
of Shuqba in the Ramallah district was shot dead by a settler.
Demonstrations took place in the town of Aboud, also near Ramallah,
while the Israeli army was leveling and uprooting trees in the area.
When the protesting was over and Mohammed Hamed was on his way home the
settler, while sitting in his car, opened fire from a close range, shot
Mohammed in the head and killed him instantly. Two settlers from
Neve-Tzuf were arrested in connection with the murder. Settlers, joined by Israeli soldiers, bulldozed land in Kifar Deek, destroying a large number of olive trees in the process. All throughout the week, settlers from Qiryat Arba have
continued to harass the Jaber family who's house is adjacent to the
Giv'at Harseena neighborhood of the settlement. The settlers regularly
throw stones at the house and other Palestinian houses nearby, break
windows, attempt to enter houses and generally intimidate families in
the area.
