Freed on 14 May 2007 after two years of administrative detention,
Alternative Information Center (AIC) activist Ahmad Abu Haniya thanks the
countless people around the world who advocated for his release—and calls on everyone to continue struggling for
the rights of the Palestinian people and a just peace for Palestinians and
Israelis.
“I knew all along that people were interested in my case,” says Ahmad, “but
only now do I understand just how many and how hard they worked.” Ahmad
continues, noting that “my two long years of unjust imprisonment served to
strengthen my resistance to injustice and belief that only a joint struggle of
Palestinians, Israelis and internationals will succeed in ending the Israeli
occupation and building a joint and just existence for everyone living in this
land.”
Administration detention is imprisonment without trial or charges.
Although international law places stringent regulations on how administrative
detention may be employed by countries, Israel is today holding approximately
800 Palestinian political activists in prison for their just and non-violent
resistance to the Israeli occupation and violations of Palestinian human and
national rights.
The Alternative
Information Center,
a progressive joint Palestinian-Israeli activist organization, will be
publishing in-depth interviews with Ahmad in the coming weeks. The interviews,
as both podcasts and written articles, will be available on the AIC website: www.alternativenews.org.
Until then, the AIC joins Ahmad in thanking the global human rights and
progressive activist communities for their tireless efforts that came together
to help free Ahmad.
