Southern West Bank totally closed

On Sunday night, Palestinian militants, members of Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades (Fatah?s armed wing), opened fire near the Gush Etzion settlement junction (Bethlehem) at a group of hitchhiking Israeli settlers, killing three and wounding four.

The attack coincided with another armed attack near Ramallah, and the assassination of an Islamic Jihad member by the Israeli Army near Jenin, also on Sunday night.

The government of Israel later decided to suspend all contacts with the Palestinian Authority and new measures limiting movement for Palestinians in the West Bank as well as reinstating dismantled checkpoints around the cities, preventing private Palestinian cars to travel. During the night Israeli army troops arrested some 18 Palestinians across the West Bank who they said were wanted by Israel, adding that the majority were members of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.

The army started to establish checkpoints between the villages and cities in the hebron and Bethlehem areas. Resulting in the total cut off between these cities and the surrounding West bank areas. The main enterance to Hebron, Nabi Younis, which is also the only way for Palestinians to reach the northern Areas of the West Bank was totally closed, after it's re-opening one year ago, not only preventing the Palestinians from using their cars but also the people's freedom of move is totally restricted. All roads between Bethlehem and hebron and the west entrance to Bethlehem in Alkhader were blocked.

In Hebron hundreds of students who are studying at the universities (Hebron university, Palestine polytechnic university, Arroub agriculture university) could not reach their classes

According to yesterday's statement by Israeli Minister Mofaz this heavy closure policy, and collective punishment of all Palestinians will be active until the 25th of October.

The Palestinian leadership condemned in a statement the killing of the Israelis. Chief Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat, added that the PNA would exert all efforts to keep the agreement to enforce calm that was reached between Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli premier Ariel Sharon in Sharm El-Sheikh last February.
