Palestinian Orphans in Hebron protesting against the Israeli crackdown on the Islamic Charitable Society.
Palestinian Orphans in Hebron protesting against the Israeli crackdown on the Islamic Charitable Society.

As reported by the Alternative Information Center (AIC), 14 Hebron-area schools and orphanages, serving some 7,000 Palestinian children, received closure orders from the Israeli army in February of this year.

A successful international campaign was commenced by tens of local and international organisations, joined by thousands of activists throughout the world, to save the schools. In the wake of this successful campaign, and for fear that the very technical nature of the issue from a legal perspective would result in a rejection, Palestinians withdrew the petition submitted to the High Court of Justice against the closing of the schools; negotiations are now being held with officials in the Israeli Civil Administration to prevent the closure of these crucial social institutions.

Although the schools are currently open and functioning, activists are encouraged to continue monitoring the situation and acting as necessary in order to permanently remove the threat of closure from these institutions. Information: www.hebronorphans.blogspot.com.
