At this moment,
people in Washington and in Jerusalem
are thinking about a war in Iran.
Not if it should be started, but when and how. If this is
to be an American war, its consequences will be many times more grievous than
the war in Iraq.
Iran
is a very hard nut. The Iranian people are united. They have a glorious national
tradition, a highly developed national pride and a tough religious ideology.
One can bomb their oil facilities, but it is a big country, not dependent on a
sophisticated infrastructure, and it cannot be subdued by bombing alone. There
will be no alternative to a military attack on the ground. Iran is not a second Iraq, neither is it Hizbullah
multiplied by ten. It is an entirely different story.

International
civil society, in close coordination with Palestinian and Arab civil society,
has a critical role to play in bringing about justice and peace to the Middle East. By adopting diverse,
sustainable, and context-sensitive, yet consistent, forms of BDS actions
against Israel in various fields, conscientious organizations and individuals
can shoulder their moral responsibility to end the Israeli system of
colonialism and racial discrimination, providing a genuine
opportunity for reconciliation and coexistence for everyone in the region,
based on equality and mutual respect for international law and fundamental
human rights.

The most recent fighting in
the Gaza Strip, which has left many people dead, confirms that the internal
strife plaguing the Occupied
Territories since the
advent of Hamas to power in January 2006 was not entirely the outcome of
outside meddling in Palestinian affairs. It is, in most part a violent
expression of the already existing weaknesses and disunity that has sadly
defined the Palestinian political milieu for generations.

Since 1988, the middle
class in Israel
has declined both in relative size and in its share of the overall
national income. At the current pace with which the middle class is
shrinking in Israel,
by 2011 the lower class will encompass more than half of the population.
This is a preview article, which will appear in News from Within, Vol. XXIII No. 2 (March 2007).
