This paper was presented by AIC economist Shir Hever, at the United Nations Seminar on Assistance to the Palestinian People, held in Doha on 5-6 February 2007.

The paper deals with the economic interests behind the devastation of the Palestinian economy, and what we can expect to see as the long-term consequences of the occupation on the Palestinian economy.

In Washington on February 2, the Middle East Quartet of peace mediators promised the Palestinian people more of the same devastating status quo, perpetuating their 40-year old Israeli occupation, prolonging the international siege imposed on them, exacerbating their internal divide, and thus cornering them into a situation that they can only shake off either through civil war or unconditional surrender to the U.S.-backed Israeli-dictated fait accompli, unless their national sense of accountability could prevail to make mutual compromises into national consensus.

IOF Escalate War Crimes in the West Bank, Killing 6 Palestinians in 2 Days Print E-mail

Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have escalated their war crimes in the West Bank over the past two days, killing 6 Palestinians in 4 separate crimes. Two were killed resisting an IOF incursion into Nablus. A third was killed in an extra-judicial execution in Tulkarm. A child was killed due to excessive use of force in Qalandia refugee camp, north of Jerusalem. And two Preventive Security operatives were killed in Beitunia, west of Ramallah. In addition, two children and an Islamic Jihad activist were injured in these crimes.

29 Palestinians Killed and more than 200 Injured in Renewed Internal Clashes Print E-mail

PCHR strongly condemns the bloody events over the past three days, the worst of their kind. These tragic events left 29 dead, including 7 civilians (incl. 3 women and 3 children), and more than 200 injured, half of them innocent civilians. The Centre welcomes reaching another ceasefire between Hamas and Fatah under Egyptian sponsorship Saturday evening. However, there is concern over the continued state of tension, military deployment, sporadic gunfire, and roadblocks in Gaza City.

Anarchists Blockade Portions of Downtown Tel Aviv for the Second Time in a Month Print E-mail

For the second time in a month activists from Anarchists Against the Wall blocked one of Tel Aviv's busiest streets using razor wire taken from the segregation wall in the West Bank village of Bil'in. In a replica of an action on December 28th, the activists brought Rothschild Street in downtown Tel Aviv to a standstill on 3 February afternoon at around 3 pm.
