Privatization of Israel's Refineries Print E-mail

In January and February 2007, the Israeli government finalized the privatization of its state-owned refineries. The Israeli Ministry of Finance contends that the privatization was a success and that the state attained a good price for the refineries. We must ask, however, whether the price paid for the refineries was indeed a fair one, and whether the taxpayers’ money hasn’t reached the pockets of the capital holders once again.

Olmert planned Lebanon war before soldiers capture Print E-mail

Ehud Olmert's decision to go to war in Lebanon in response to abductions of soldiers was taken as early as March 2006, according to a leak of his evidence to the commission investigating the war. The report means that the military strategy was decided more than three months before it was triggered by Hizbollah's abductions of two soldiers on Israel's northern border in July.

There is no dearth of explanations for the miserable lives that some women lead in our society. Lack of education, economic deprivation and political marginalization are put forward as basic factors contributing to this phenomenon. There is no doubt that all these theories are valid in their own right, as each sheds at least some light on the nature of trials and tribulations of women. However, most such explanations are narrow in their scope and hence miss the overall framework within which violence against women takes place. And this framework is the social environment, traditions and values in which women are born, bred and brought up.

Over the years, B'Tselem has issued numerous reports on the abusive conduct of police officers and soldiers against Palestinians who violate the closure to seek work. While the Israeli authorities condemn the acts of abuse that are reported in the media, claiming they are lamentable exceptions, the report shows that these cases are not exceptions at all. In fact, they are the tip of the iceberg, under which is concealed a harsh routine of violence and abuse, including the use of illegal force, illegal damage to property, use of illegal force to extract information and recruit collaborators, and unlawful use of firearms.
