International Responses to Events in Gaza Print E-mail

With the Hamas takeover of the Gaza Strip between 10 and 15 June 2007, the position of the Palestinian Authority (PA) among other nations has changed dramatically. Israel, the EU, and the US have all announced that they are resuming direct aid to the PA, now that it is controlled by the Fatah party once again. They had terminated aid to the PA after Hamas won the Prime Minister position and a Parliamentary majority in early 2006. All of these world leaders have supported PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s decision to fire Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh (of Hamas), disband the government, name a new cabinet without Hamas members, and rule by emergency decree. All have also expressed interest that some aid should go to the Gaza Strip in addition to the Fatah-controlled West Bank, though through an intermediary rather than directly to Hamas.

Popular Fatah leader, Marwan Barghouthi, who is currently serving five life sentences in Israeli jails, for allegations of murder and attempted murder, addressed the Palestinian people, and Fatah and Hamas, in a message sent from his prison.

The Gaza Strip has recently witnessed unprecedented bloody fighting between Hamas and Fatah movement, which has peaked with Hamas’ decision to show down the conflict militarily and the takeover of all Palestinian security headquarters and sites and the seizure of complete control over the Gaza Strip by its military wing—Izziddin al-Qassam Brigades. This fighting has taken the lives of 146 Palestinians (36 of them are civilians), including 5 children and 8 women, and has wounded at least 700 others.

Forty years in which Palestinian children are born and raised as prisoners in their homes that the Occupation converted into a prison, deprived at the outset of all the rights that human beings are entitled to because they are human.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Declares State of Emergency and Dissolves the PA Government Print E-mail

This evening, 14 June, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas signed a decree, dissolving the Hamas/Fatah coalition government, dismissing Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh from his position and declaring a state of emergency.
