The Palestinian Elections

Elections are a normal practice in any democratic and free society. People go voluntarily to the voting polls to freely choose their political representatives. This democratic practice should be conducted in an open, transparent, regular and systematic manner. Elections Proclamation

The elections to the Palestinian Legislative Council which is supposed to take place on 25/1/2006, represent an opportunity for strengthening the democratic process within the Palestinian society, as well as a platform for the free expression of the national and social interests of the Palestinian people.

The Alternative Information Center (AIC) condemns the blatant interference of the Israeli occupation in the due process of the Palestinian elections: the use of force and intimidation against voters and candidates, the arresting of candidates to the PLC, the severe limitations on free campaigning, as well as the prohibitions on the freedom of movement of the Palestinian voters.

We also condemn the aggressive interference of the American Administration, which threatens to cut all financial aid to the Palestinian people, in case the outcome of the elections disagrees with its political ambitions and expectations.

Furthermore, the AIC condemns all foreign financial and political support for specific  candidates and movements as a violation of the due democratic process. We see this as a blatant and unacceptable interference in internal Palestinian issues.

In addition, we re-emphasize tour support for the Palestinian people?s rights and freedom to choose their representatives in a free and democratic manner.
