Alternative Information Center Staff Member Ahmad Abu Hannya Placed in Administrative Detention
Ahmad Abu-Haniyeh, 32 years old, is a resident of the village Dar Salah in the Bethlehem region of Palestine, and a staff-member of the Alternative Information Center (AIC). He worked as the Youth Project Coordinator in the Beit Sahour office of the AIC. However, he has been illegally confined (according to international law) as an ?administrative detainee? following his arrest by the Israeli military at a checkpoint while making his way to the AIC office in Beit Sahour on 18 May 2005.

Up to the present, Ahmad still has been given no reason for his arrest or been informed of what he is suspected of. Three days after his arrest Ahmad was interrogated for the first time and in the interrogation no accusations were brought against him. Since this interrogation, Ahmad has not been interrogated even once, although the General Security Services (GSS) has stated that he is actively supporting terror and is a part of military actions that endanger the security of the area.
After Ahmad had been incarcerated for six months in the Ofer and Ktzi?ot detention camps, the military commander made the decision to prolong Ahmad?s administrative detention for an additional six months. The latest administrative detention order does not contain any new information, it merely reiterates the same vague allegations, including ?being a part of a terrorist infrastructure? and having some type of connection with ?known and dangerous terrorists.? Although Ahmad vehemently denies that there is any validity to these extreme accusations, the military judge, Ronen Atzmon, approved the extension of his incarceration. The judge claims that it is not possible for the military to prosecute or even interrogate Ahmad because it might reveal the ?security services action methods.? An appeal is currently being filed by Ahmad?s Lawyer, Sahar Francis, of the Addameer association.
The continuing administrative detention of Ahmad blatantly violates international law, which protects the right to liberty and due process, and is actually being used as a tool to oppress political activists in Palestine who struggle non-violently against the Israeli Occupation and for a joint Israeli-Palestinian future.
Ahmad was, and still is, a dedicated staff member of the AIC. The AIC is a Palestinian-Israeli organization where Jewish Israelis, Palestinians Citizens of Israel and Palestinians from the Occupied Palestinian Territories, along with many Internationals, work together for social change and human rights in both the Israeli and Palestinian societies, as well as an end to the Israeli Occupation.
We urge you to write letters in protest of Ahmad?s illegal incarceration by the Israeli authorities. It is also important to emphasize that Ahmad?s is one case of many Palestinian political prisoners, all of whom should be released. It is also very important to send personal letters of support to Ahmad.
