Israel sets border with Gaza

On Wednesday 21st of September 2005, Israeli Interior Minister Opir Pines signd the decree making four Gaza passage points "regular" border crossings, declaring Israels first international border since the UN Partition Plan from 1947

Pines signed Wednesday morning decrees turning the four passage points between the Gaza Strip and Israel into international border crossings.

The four crossings are:

  • Erez [1]

  • Karni [2]

  • Sufa [3]

  • Kerem Shalom [4]

During Israel?s rule over Gaza, Palestinians who wanted to enter Israel, or International wo wnated to enter Gaza, needed special permits issued by the IDF.

However, once the military rule in Gaza officially ended, authority over the border crossings was transferred to the interior minister

Conditions remain

But there will be no easing of criteria for Palestinians to enter Israel. Considerations will remain the same, and it will remain up to Civil Administration or IDF officials at border crossings to issue entry permits to Israel.

"I think international borders will be agreed once we finish permanent status negotiations on borders, because we can't classify it legally as an international border now when Gaza is not free of occupation," chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said.

Also after the so called "Disengagement" Israel is keeping control over Gaza's sea-lanes and air space as well as the Rafah [5] crossing point to Egypt will remain closed for the next six months while discussions continue for a possible international monitoring by a third party.
