Yated Ne'eman, a newspaper serving the Jewish ultra-orthodox community in Israel, published a leading commentary Thursday calling on Israel to prohibit the entry of Jews into the Temple Mount area. “The Jews who speak of 'prayer in the holiest place for Jews' are not referring to prayer,” the paper writes. “They are presenting their political plan as a religious wish, and use their “teachings” as an ax to grind out political achievements. This is not a struggle for the right of prayer but a type of political demonstration”.
Numerous secular Israelis, including some who define themselves as “left-wing”, have begun discussing the “right” of Jews to freedom of worship in the al Aqsa mosque compound. These discussions, conducted using the discourse of human rights and the “freedom of worship” for Jews, are completely disconnected from the reality and legal implications of Israel's military occupation of East Jerusalem, and in it the al Aqsa mosque compound. Unlike them, the religious newspaper Yated Ne'eman clearly sees that religion is used as a smokescreen to cover the political goals of those Israelis entering the al Aqsa mosque to “pray”.
“Most of their speakers declare to the press that it isn't possible that the state of Israel will not apply its sovereignty over the Temple Mount”, the paper continues. “They assume they should complete the Israeli army occupation from the 1967 war...And in this fake struggle for honour, they are willing to pay in costly blood. Even if this is the blood of innocent people”.
For the ultra-orthodox paper, the entry of Jews to the al Aqsa compound is religiously prohibited. Tradition relates that this was the site of the biblical temples, which held the 'holy of holies' that could be entered only by the high priests. “ Over time the precise place of the Temple has been lost to us and all who enter the area of the Temple Mount are unknowingly liable to enter the holy of holies”, the paper notes, adding that all leading rabbis are united in the prohibition of Jews entering the area for this reason.
“The truth must be forcefully declared”, adds Yated Ne'eman. “Those who act to bring Jews to the Temple Mount are sinning and causing others to sin. Every one able must act on this issue. The government of Israel must close the Temple Mount (to Jews)!”
What secular and even Zionist “left-wing” Israeli society is unable to say is said by the newspaper representing a large segment of Israel's ultra-orthodox Jewish newspaper. The government of Israel must ban Jews from entering al Aqsa.
“Attempts of Jews to enter the Temple Mount are like throwing a match into a barrel of oil”, the lead commentary goes on. “The Temple Mount is liable to become a volcano which will cover the entire Middle East with its ash and smoke. Those who attempt to enter the Temple Mount...will not calm down until they leave behind scorched earth. Jerusalem is already sitting on a powder keg, which will glow with the fire of hatred. And then the “emperors” will languish at the sight of the city going up in flames. The important thing is that “Temple Mount is in their hands”.
