Shir Hever, economist with the Alternative Information Center, along with Sam Bahour, Palestinian-American businessman and entrepreneur, made presentations on 14 May 2008 at the Quaker Friends Center in Ramallah, Palestine, on the topic of “The Economics of Occupation and the Business of Development: A Critical Look at Economics, Business, and Palestinian Rights.” 

  In the first of two episodes covering these lectures, Shir Hever discusses the issue of development in the economy of occupation, concentrating on the question of the role and impact of international aid funds to the Palestinians.

Part I:

The following is the second of two episodes covering lectures presented at the Quaker Friends Center in Ramallah, Palestine, on the topic of “The Economics of Occupation and the Business of Development: A Critical Look at Economics, Business, and Palestinian Rights.”  

In this one, Palestinian-American businessman Sam Bahour, discusses the structure, limits and effectiveness of Palestinian economic development taking place under Israeli occupation.

From atop the hillside, the crux of Issawiya’s problems becomes evident, its decisive location. Circling around you see the Israeli military base, the tower of Hebrew University, the Jewish settlement of French Hill, and an Israeli military detention center. Next to the detention center is the Ring Road, vast land appropriated from Issawiya to build the E-1 settlement bloc, and in the distance, the imposing Jewish settlement of Ma’ale Adummim. In the middle of all this, cramped and constricted, lies Issawiya.
