The state flag of Lebanon.
Note, this articles was originally published in November 2005
Confessionalism in Lebanon is not
only a legacy, it is a constructed system, and I would almost venture to say a
rational one. What follows is not a historical overview, the likes of which is
often tedious when it comes in the guise of an indispensable introduction. This
is not even an introduction. If the current debate is about the options open to
Lebanon, and the way in which each of us positions ourselves vis-à-vis these
options, then let us start by determining the nature of the present moment. I
will venture, first, to say that the assassination of the late Prime Minister
Hariri, the withdrawal of the Syrian forces from Lebanon, and all the events
related thereto, do not constitute ‘the nature of the present moment’ but only
some of its manifestations. This nature and its manifestations, although
related, are not one and the same thing. Although this presupposes our ability
to distance ourselves from what we may feel strongly about, yet perhaps this
caution or good judgment is the only thing left for us to do today.
On another note, Lebanon, as all
other countries in history of course although perhaps to a greater degree than
others—and this assertion is open to analysis and argument—does not exist in isolation,
but is affected by, indeed accessory to, what transpires around it in this geographic
region. The country’s urgent need to reconstitute its internal dynamics
according to new definitions and agreements arises even as stormy winds rage
through the entire region, overturning the country’s state of affairs and
exposing it to a host of unknown possibilities.

The current crisis of
the Arab world cannot be explained by mere circumstantial factors. What we are
witnessing are clear signs of the splitting of the Arab social body. The
unprecedented violence in Iraq,
Palestine and Lebanon
is linked to the violence taking place in Algeria and elsewhere in different
forms and under different slogans.
We need not look further
than the current value system for such grim confirmation—its stench is the
first sign of this rotting and corrosion.

Despite the complete
political silence of Fatah al-Islam indicating its purpose or vision of the
world—save for a few empty and hastily composed statements—its fighters’
willingness to die so readily has become well known. Hence, they can be
described as those affiliated to a jihadi movement a la al-Qaeda.

A few weeks ago, a five-year
sentence was passed down in Syria
to attorney Anwar al-Banni under the declared pretext of “harming the country’s
reputation.” Under the same pretext, in a television interview, the attorney of
Mr. al-Banni who is also the defense attorney for Mr. Michel Kilo, said the
latter is facing the threat of execution. Hence, the situation has graduated to
the status of caricature.

The Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades,
which is supposedly the European branch of al-Qaeda, issued a leaflet
threatening the French with a wave of "bloody Jihad" attacks in the heart of Paris for electing Nicolas
Sarkozy, the “Zionist Crusader.” The leaflet was splashed across the internet
as usual. However, it came on the eve of the handover between the outgoing and
incoming president and accurately specified the period of operations between
now and the first round of legislative elections on the 10th of next
month.
