Numerous
people wished to commemorate the life of Saadia Marziano , founder of the Black
Panthers movement in Israel,
who died last week. However, their speeches were mostly garbled and lacking in
content. This is a shame.
In contrast
to the majority of those commemorating him, Saadia wrote an important page in the
chronicles of Israeli history, and the demonstration of the Black Panthers on
the lawn across from the Jerusalem Municipality belongs to a small number of
events that mark significant historical turning points.

I have no problem in taking part in
a conference where Zionist spokespersons are invited too, for debates are part
and parcel of a healthy political arena. As well, I have no problem being
invited to official public meetings, initiated by government agencies,
including Israeli ones. I need, however, to know exactly what kind of gathering
I am supposed to participate.

Avi Dichter, Israeli
Minister of Internal Security, and, previously, boss of Israel’s
General Security Services (GSS), is a courageous man, at least when
he was dealing with the interrogation of handcuffed Palestinian
detainees. A man with a lot of blood on his hands, he is much less
courageous when confronted with the possibility of being arrested by
the British police.

In
two weeks, a social forum will be held in Madrid that is devoted
entirely to the political situation in the Middle East. This Forum
for a Just Peace in the Middle East was organized by the social
movements of Madrid, including social organizations, solidarity
movements, human rights organizations, women’s groups and the trade
unions. More than 200 organizations were invited from Israel, the
Occupied Palestinian Territories and other places in West Asia. The
goal of the Forum is to conduct a deep and wide discussion on the
political situation in the region, the danger of the upcoming war and
also to speak about a joint strategy of struggle against occupation,
colonialism and war. In this sense, it is possible to define the
social forum of Madrid as anti-Annapolis. If the target of Annapolis
is Iran, and in a wider perspective the Muslim world, our own targets
in Madrid will be the neoconservative global war, the war of Ehud
Olmert and George Bush, and the ideology of the clash of
civilizations.

Saturday, 3
November, our friend Danny Amit passed away. I last
met him, a couple of months ago in Bil’in, where we were celebrating the victory of the
village residents and the solidarity movement at the Israeli Supreme Court.
