Separated or united?

Eighteen percent of the Israeli voters are Palestinian citizens, and this is definitively not a marginal minority.  Until the mid-seventies, through pressures and corruption of local notables and the heads of families, the Arab citizens supported various Zionist parties. Only a courageous minority voted for the Israeli Communist Party (ICP), which was after 1948 represented the only legal party defending the civic rights of the Palestinian population of Israel.

Israeli Politics in a Post-Sharon Era

Reading the local and international media, one gets the feeling that the brain-hemorrhage which pushed Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon out of politics will have almost the same effect as those two bullets which ten years ago ended the life of his friend and predecessor, Yitzchak Rabin - the death of the peace process.

Netanyahu Elected Chairman of the Likud

 

Finally, the Likud has a new leader who will stand at the head of its list in the coming elections. After winning a comfortable 44% of the party vote, former PM Benjamin Netanyahu easily defeated his primary opponent, foreign minister Sylvan Shalom, who only received 33%. Surprisingly, the far-right extremist candidate Moshe Feiglin managed to garner 15% of the vote.

A few days ago, I met in Tel Aviv with a friend of mine, an intelligent and educated woman with whom I have shared, over the past two decades, dozens of experiences demonstrating against the occupation and repression in the occupied territories. Our conversation naturally turned to the current political turmoil and the upcoming elections.
