Azmi Bishara is attacked today for challenging the non-democratic character of Israel as an ethnic state with all his talent and strong democratic sensitivity, and for putting a mirror in the face of the fake Israeli liberals—a mirror which doesn’t lie and shows the deformed face of Israeli democratic pretensions.

I don’t think it is accidental that a majority of those who are hailing the decisions of Ilan Pappe and the late Tanya Reinhart to leave the country, and presenting their decisions as the “only true revolutionary way to resist,” belong to the ultra-radical anti-Israeli current in the international movement, often close to and in collaboration with mere anti-Jewish and negationist (Judeocide-denial) groups. This week, I canceled all my meetings and appointments in order to take my place in the weekly demonstration, which marked the second anniversary of this important mobilization against the Apartheid Wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Together with two hundred other Israelis and a few hundred Palestinians, including a delegation coming from the southern West Bank, we marched, once again, in the village, and from the village to the fence, opposite the huge and ugly buildings of the Matityahu settlement, a new suburb of what may become the biggest settlement in the occupied West Bank—Modi’in Ilit.
