Commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1967 war and four full decades of occupation of the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights was a difficult challenge if one takes into consideration the present high level of de-politicization in Israel, as well as in the occupied Palestinian territories. Moreover, what we are expressing in our demonstrations is our own failure, the failure to end this occupation and put a stop to the process of colonization of the de jure as well as de facto annexed territories.

When the borders of the law are moving backward and delegitimizing political opinions and acts, should we respect that law? Asking the question is in fact already answering it. A regime which delegitimizes political opinions or acts, which, in the past have been legitimate, loses, at least partially, its democratic nature, therefore obliging the citizen to rebel and to defy the undemocratic law.

I don’t think it is accidental that a majority of those who are hailing the decisions of Ilan Pappe and the late Tanya Reinhart to leave the country, and presenting their decisions as the “only true revolutionary way to resist,” belong to the ultra-radical anti-Israeli current in the international movement, often close to and in collaboration with mere anti-Jewish and negationist (Judeocide-denial) groups. They use Ilan’s decision—of course, without his consent—to prove that the Israeli people are 100 percent bad, corrupt and don’t deserve to even exist on the face of earth.
