International advocacy work in Palestine by Rifat Odeh Kassis
Born in Beit Sahour, Rifat Odeh Kassis has long been active in the Palestinian struggle on a number of non-violent fronts. Throughout his career, he has been advocating and actively campaigning for the effective application of international human rights and humanitarian law in Palestine, through various professional and voluntary positions: director for YMCA rehabilitation programs in the West Bank, where he spearheaded the YMCA/YWCA Joint Advocacy Initiative, representative of Some Ecumenical donor agencies in Central Asia, founder of Defence for Children International (DCI) and President of the DCI movement at the global level
International Coordinator and Project Manager of World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical Accompaniment Program in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI). Currently he is the special advisor for the WCC General Secretary on the Middle East and very recently he was asked by the World Economic Forum to serve on the Global Agenda Council on Children Welfare.
Rifat Odeh Kassis will speak about his personal experience in international advocay work, focusing on the aim and the development of the subject, its successes, its defeats, and its actual problems ending with suggestions for strenghtening the message and its effectivness.
The AIC is a joint Plaestinian-Israeli activist organization engaged in dissemination of information, political advocacy and grassroots activism. The AICafe is a political and cultural café open on Tuesday and Saturday night from 7pm untill 11pm. It is located in the Alternative Information Center in Beit Sahour, close to Suq a Shaab square (follow the sign to Jadal Center) We have a small library with novels, political books and magazines. We also sell a number of Films in DVD copies and the AIC publications which are aimed to critically analyze both the Palestinian and Israeli sociaties as well as the conflict itself.
