African refugees and asylum seekers in Israel
A personal experience
Johanna is a German volunteer who has worked over the past 4 months for the African Refugee Development Center. She will share with us her experiences in working with African refugees in the shelter where they help managing the accommodation for the new refugees and provide them with the basic needs.
Johanna will also talk about the Israeli policy concerning the influx of African refugees and what problems the African refugees face when coming to the complex Israeli society.
Israel is host to thousands of refugees, many of whom have no rights and live under constant threat of deportion to their home countries. About 400 refugees and asylum seekers are being held in detention centers. In 1954, Israel adopted the United Nations Convention on the Status of Stateless Persons. However, no legislation has been passed granting refugees rights.
